Six Degrees: whats with the name?
In 1929 Frigyes Karinthy, a Hungarian writer, wrote a short story, Chains (Láncszemek). In it he outlined how that due to technological advances in communications and travel, friendship networks could grow larger and span greater distances. In particular, Karinthy believed that the modern world was ‘shrinking’ due to this ever-increasing connectedness of human beings. Despite great physical distances between the globe’s individuals, he believed the growing density of human networks made the actual social distance far smaller. It is this very story, which gave rise to the notion of six degrees of separation. Each individual is an average of six steps away from another in terms of connections.
